Palantir (PLTR) co-founder and PayPal Mafia figurehead Peter Thiel has purchased a $12 million mansion in Palermo Chico, one of Buenos Aires' most prestigious residential neighborhoods — the highest-priced transaction ever recorded in the area. This is no ordinary real estate investment. Earlier this year, Thiel spent over a week in Buenos Aires holding private meetings with senior government officials, and has now had four formal meetings with President Javier Milei since their first encounter in January 2024.
An Ideological Alignment Between Two Anarcho-Capitalists
Understanding the Thiel–Milei relationship starts with ideology. The two are strikingly alike: a deep aversion to state intervention, a view of taxation as theft, support for cryptocurrency-based monetary sovereignty, and advocacy for radical free-market principles. Milei is a sitting president who openly calls himself an "anarcho-capitalist."
At their most recent meeting, Milei described the encounter as "remarkable," stating they were "in complete agreement that taxation is an act of theft." Milei also noted that Thiel had expressed interest in becoming president as an anarcho-capitalist. Thiel has been watching Argentina with the expectation that Milei's shock-therapy economic reform program could succeed where other populist experiments have failed.
This ideological resonance extends beyond Thiel. At the 2024 Milken Forum, Elon Musk publicly endorsed investing in Argentina, and Stanley Druckenmiller has also spoken highly of Milei. Milei has aggressively courted Silicon Valley capital, holding successive meetings with the CEOs of Apple, Alphabet, and Meta. In 2026, he declared a "year of structural reform," completing deregulation and labor reform legislation.
Palantir's Latin America Expansion and the AI Oasis Vision
Thiel's visit aligns directly with Palantir's strategy to expand across Latin America. Palantir's core business centers on data analytics and AI software for government, military, and enterprise clients — and Argentina is a leading candidate as the regional hub for that expansion.
Damian Reidel, a key advisor to President Milei, has a concrete blueprint to turn Argentina into an "AI oasis" — leveraging the country's nuclear energy program as a power base for AI infrastructure, and utilizing Patagonia's low-cost land and cool climate as prime data center real estate.
Vaca Muerta Shale + Lithium Triangle = AI Energy Infrastructure
Argentina's appeal as an AI hub is rooted in resource geopolitics.
The Vaca Muerta shale formation is one of the world's top five shale oil and gas reserves, accounting for over 70% of Argentina's total natural gas production. This shale gas can be used for behind-the-meter (BTM) power generation, supplying data centers directly without relying on the grid.
Lithium is equally critical. Together with Bolivia and Chile, Argentina forms the "Lithium Triangle," a region that holds over 85% of the world's known lithium reserves. By 2026, Argentina is projected to supply more than 30% of global lithium output.
The vertically integrated vision is coming into focus: shale gas powers the data centers, lithium batteries store the energy, and Palantir's AI software optimizes the entire system.
The Mansion Is Just the Beginning
Buenos Aires real estate consultancy BuySell BA stated that "this will not be Thiel's last acquisition," adding that members of his inner circle are evaluating additional asset purchases. The mansion Thiel acquired is a 1,600-square-meter French Academic-style estate at 2900 Dardo Rocha Street in Palermo Chico, designed by Argentine architect Alejandro Bustillo. It features six bedrooms, marble staircases, a wine cellar, and garden terraces.
For investors tracking Palantir's growth trajectory, Argentina is a market worth watching closely. A population of 46 million, world-class energy resources, and a government ideologically aligned with Silicon Valley's most prominent libertarian — the convergence of all three in a single market is rare.
