I am happy to announce Joyful Heart Foundation as the April 2026 CU Charity of the Month. Five percent of top line revenues from this Substack for the month of April will go to The Joyful Heart Foundation, and I hope others will spread the word and donate as well.
The Joyful Heart Foundation was started by Actress Mariska Hargitay, whose role on Law & Order: SVU not only required research into abuse issues but brought her thousands of letters and emails from survivors of abuse.
What draws me to this charity is not only the overarching evident need but three specific, meaningful programs Joyful Heart uses to expand protection, care, and healing for survivors of violence and abuse.
1. Heal the Healers
Providing resources to organizations on the front lines responding to child abuse, rape, and domestic violence. Joyful Heart provides professionals and healers with financial support and resources for networking, collaboration, and peer support.
These healers deal with secondary trauma resulting from close, extended engagement in the support and assistance of the traumatized. This is a very important and often overlooked aspect of creating a robust, healthy environment from which these wonderful people can help those suffering primary trauma and abuse.
2. End the Rape Kit Backlog
When I first heard of this, I was confused and did not understand. As it dawned on me what the backlog is, I was horrified.
My time in medicine was not very long, but I will never forget these cases. It is incredible to me that rape test kits going untested is a problem that we have not already solved. I just had no idea.
There is a significant financial reason for this backlog, and Joyful Heart works to enact laws and policies in all 50 states to secure funding and resources to assure all rape test kits actually get tested. From the Joyful Heart/End the Backlog web site:
When we started this work in 2010, there was no comprehensive, best practice approach for rape kit reform. Our early work showed the effectiveness and necessity of a system-wide, multidisciplinary team approach. From there, we developed best practices, including mandating the testing of all kits and establishing rape kit tracking systems, that have served as a national model for jurisdictions tackling reform. These best practices have been validated by federal guidelines for the handling of rape kits.
This is just incredibly important.
3. The Image-Based Initiative
While raising my boys, a high school-aged girl in their school district tragically committed suicide as a result of image-based abuse. There are just no words after something like that.
It should never happen, but that is not the case.
Technology has fomented an explosion of image-based abuse.
In fact, legislation is being outpaced by the speed at which technology is evolving.
Presently, a patchwork of state laws address some issues but are inadequate. The U.S. needs a comprehensive legislative approach to image-based abuse, and Joyful Heart works.
