Samsung and SK Hynix Workers Are Buying Ferraris as AI Memory Boom Mints New Wealth
South Korean chip workers at Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are on a luxury car buying spree, local media report, as the AI memory supercycle delivers record bonuses and surging stock gains.

- Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix employees are buying Ferraris and luxury goods as HBM bonus windfalls and surging stock prices create a first-of-its-kind chip-worker wealth effect in South Korea
The AI memory demand explosion is rapidly swelling the net worth of employees at Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. South Korean broadcaster MBC News reported that semiconductor workers flush with performance bonuses and stock gains are competing to buy Ferraris and other supercars.
HBM Profits Reach the Paycheck
At the center of the story is HBM (High Bandwidth Memory). HBM commands a 5–8x price premium over conventional DRAM and is the critical component inside NVDA's AI accelerators. SK Hynix controls over 70% of the HBM market and posted record operating profit in 2025. Samsung Electronics is ramping HBM3E supply as its own earnings recovery accelerates.
Both companies pay sizable variable compensation on top of base salary — Samsung's OPI (Over-Performance Incentive) and TAI (Target Achievement Incentive) can run into the hundreds of percent of monthly pay annually. Stock prices are also well off their 2024 lows. The simultaneous windfall from investment gains and cash bonuses has produced a sharp, sudden spike in purchasing power among tens of thousands of employees.
"Wealth Transfer" Effect Reaches the Luxury Car Market
According to an authorized Ferrari dealer in South Korea, demand has visibly picked up near the semiconductor clusters of Icheon, Hwaseong, and Yongin — cities home to the wafer fabs of Samsung and SK Hynix. Lamborghini and McLaren dealers report a similar trend. Reports of surging demand are also surfacing for Swiss luxury watches, upscale residential real estate in Cheongdam-dong, and domestic and international property markets.
The AI supercycle is for the first time visibly converting corporate profits into mass consumer spending by the engineers who build the chips. As long as the global memory boom continues, this wealth-effect dynamic is likely to persist.
