Musk's XChat Launches April 23 — X Money Integration Signals Super App Era

X (formerly Twitter), led by Elon Musk, is set to officially launch its standalone messaging app XChat on April 23. With payment service X Money expected to be integrated, Musk's vision of an 'everything app' is becoming a reality.

X (formerly Twitter), led by Elon Musk, will launch its standalone messaging app XChat simultaneously worldwide on April 23. Originally announced for April 17, the release was quietly pushed back without any official explanation. The app will launch on iOS (iPhone and iPad) first, while Android users will have access via the web at chat.x.com in the interim.

Connect Globally — No Phone Number Required

XChat's defining differentiator is that users can communicate with anyone in the world using only their X account — no phone number required. This marks a fundamental structural departure from platforms like KakaoTalk and Telegram, which mandate phone numbers for identity verification. The app supports multiple devices including iOS, macOS, and Windows, and enables group chats of up to 200 participants.

Security as a Core Competitive Edge

Musk has stated that XChat was "designed with inspiration from Bitcoin's cryptographic principles." The app ships with end-to-end encryption (E2EE) enabled by default, along with screenshot blocking, auto-delete messaging, zero ads, and minimal data tracking — all out of the box. Compared to KakaoTalk, which stores messages on servers, and Telegram, which only applies E2EE in 'Secret Chat' mode, XChat sets a significantly higher baseline security standard.

X Money: Send Payments Without Leaving the Chat

XChat's true ambition lies in its integration with X Money, a comprehensive financial platform that supports P2P transfers, cryptocurrency payments, and high-yield savings accounts — all accessible via an X account. The experience mirrors sending money through KakaoPay within a KakaoTalk chat, allowing seamless in-conversation payments. X has already secured a partnership with Visa and obtained money transmission licenses in more than 40 U.S. states, establishing the regulatory foundation for real-world deployment.

That said, X Money's full global rollout faces several variables. Regulatory developments in the U.S. — including cryptocurrency and payments legislation such as the CLARITY Act — could influence the scope and timing of the launch. As of now, X Money is slated for a U.S.-first release, with expansion to global markets including South Korea expected to follow on a rolling basis.

Super App Strategy: Adding AI to the Mix

XChat will also integrate with xAI's Grok 3 AI assistant. Planned features include 'Grok Voice' for conversational voice interaction and a real-time camera-sharing function that lets users ask Grok questions about what they're seeing. By bundling messaging, AI, and payments into a single platform, this architecture aligns precisely with Musk's long-held blueprint to bring the WeChat-style super app model — proven in China — to Western markets.

'KakaoTalk on High Alert' — But Real-World Barriers Remain

Industry analysts suggest that XChat could rapidly capture market share in the messaging space, leveraging X's global user base of 500–600 million. KakaoTalk — already ceding domestic market share to Instagram — now faces yet another formidable challenger. However, many observers note that displacing KakaoTalk's deeply entrenched ecosystem — family group chats, workplace announcements, and daily routines — in the short term will be no easy feat. The true test of XChat's competitive edge will come when Grok 3 and X Money integrations reach full deployment.

XChat is scheduled for a global iOS launch on April 23. X Money early access is expected to roll out in the U.S. first in April, with a phased global expansion to follow.
