Apple Names John Ternus as Next CEO — Tim Cook to Become Executive Chairman in September

A 24-year Apple veteran and hardware engineering chief since 2001 — his defining challenge will be closing the gap in the AI race.

Justin·April 21, 2026·3 min read

AAPL officially announced on the 21st (local time) that John Ternus, head of Hardware Engineering, will succeed Tim Cook as the company's next Chief Executive Officer. Cook will complete the transition by late summer and move into the role of Executive Chairman of the Board, with Ternus's tenure as CEO commencing on September 1.

Ternus is a 24-year Apple veteran who joined the company in 2001. He was appointed Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and rose to lead the division in 2021. Among his most notable achievements is the development and launch of Apple's proprietary silicon chips — the shift away from Intel processors that drove a significant surge in Mac sales. The Apple Watch and AirPods lineups also grew into core business pillars under his leadership of the hardware division.

"The Head of an Engineer, the Soul of an Innovator"

Cook described Ternus as someone with "the head of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with dignity and integrity." Ternus himself remarked, "I was fortunate to work under Steve Jobs and to have Tim Cook as a mentor," adding that he is "deeply grateful for the opportunity to carry Apple's mission forward."

The Wall Street Journal characterized Ternus as an "affable mechanical engineer," noting that his leadership style more closely resembles the measured composure of Cook than the volatile intensity of Jobs. Cook reportedly signaled to the board and senior leadership in January that he wished to reduce his workload, and the succession process is said to have been in preparation for roughly a year since then. The New York Times reported that Ternus had been consistently cited as the frontrunner for the role. Johny Srouji, former Senior Vice President, will take over as head of the Hardware Engineering division.

Inheriting Cook's Legacy — and the AI Imperative

The AAPL that Ternus inherits has achieved unprecedented profitability under Cook's leadership, surpassing $100 billion in annual net income. In January of this year, the company posted record-high iPhone revenue, driven by a recovery in Chinese demand.

However, artificial intelligence remains a critical challenge. While Silicon Valley rivals including NVDA, GOOGL, and MSFT have been aggressively competing for AI dominance, AAPL has drawn criticism for its limited visibility in consumer AI services. Ternus takes the helm with the twin mandates of overhauling the Siri virtual assistant and strengthening the company's AI service competitiveness.

Ternus is a California native who majored in mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating, he worked at virtual reality startup Virtual Research Systems before joining AAPL in 2001.
